IWANA RESORT

EVENT POSTER

I was entrusted by the client to create a visual that captures the spirit of the snowboarding event held at Iwana Resort in Hokkaido, with the theme #HiddenHokkaido for the 2023 season. This project was both exciting and challenging, as I needed to convey the hidden beauty of Hokkaido’s natural landscape along with the thrill of this intense winter sport.

The Idea

The primary concept of this poster is to encapsulate the sense of "discovery" and "adventure" inherent in the #HiddenHokkaido theme. Hokkaido is renowned for its spectacular snowy scenery and resorts that offer unique experiences for snow sports enthusiasts. With this in mind, I aimed to create an atmosphere that conveys the exploration, energy, and freedom found in snowboarding through pristine, beautiful areas.

I also wanted to highlight Iwana Resort as a distinctive destination, not only for professionals but also for adventurers seeking the authentic, untouched side of Hokkaido.

The Process

Research and Inspiration: The initial stage involved researching Hokkaido, especially Iwana Resort, and the stunning snow-covered mountains in the area. I also looked at several vintage posters from the era when skiing and snowboarding were growing in popularity, so the design could evoke nostalgia while remaining relevant to a modern audience.

Color Selection and Composition: I chose a calm yet contrasting color palette, dominated by whites and light blues to depict snow and a clear sky backdrop. Warmer colors like reds and oranges for the snowboarders' attire were intended to create contrast and highlight the action taking place on the snow.

Illustration and Details: I wanted each character in the poster to look enthusiastic, with expressive movements that showcase the excitement of the activity. The resort is depicted in a minimalist style in the background, allowing the focus to stay on the snowboarding action while subtly hinting at Iwana Resort’s identity.

   The
Challenges
      Faced

One of the main challenges was balancing the elements of nature and action within a single frame without overcrowding it. I needed to maintain a balance between the background details and the main focus on the snowboarders to ensure the intended message remained clear and direct.

Depicting the movement of the snow being scattered by the snowboards also required careful attention to make it look natural yet dramatic. I wanted to convey that this is an intense yet enjoyable activity, inviting the audience to feel the same excitement.

Key

Points

With this poster, I aim to convey an invitation to visit Iwana Resort in Hokkaido and discover the "hidden Hokkaido." This is not just another snowboarding event, but an opportunity to explore a beautiful, lesser-known place and experience the freedom of riding through the snow in breathtaking landscapes.

This poster is intended to attract an audience looking for an authentic and unforgettable winter experience, while also promoting Hokkaido's natural beauty as a winter travel destination waiting to be explored.
